Jedi training
Back by popular demand, Luce County 4-H and Mackinac County 4-H are offering virtual Jedi Training Club to any youth in Michigan. This club puts a “Star Wars” spin on mindfulness. Each session we will explore a new skill of the Jedi. The last sessions will be the Jedi trails, where after completion, you will become a Jedi Knight. Join 4-H as you embrace the ways of The Force. Livestock learning videos available
In case you missed them, the recordings of the Livestock Learning webinar series in April are now available. Topics included: Selection and what the judge is looking for, showmanship fundamentals, beef daily care, livestock nutrition, biosecurity at the show and on the farm, sheep and swine daily care, goat showmanship and daily care. All of these can be found at mediaspace.msu.edu.
Rabbit/cavy breed showcase opportunity
Youth can showcase their rabbit and cavy breeds while educating fellow 4-H members. Selected videos will be highlighted on the virtual learning opportunities “Rabbit Breed Selection” and “Cavy Breed Selection.” Suggested topics to include in the video are: why you chose the breed you have; what you like about the breed; anything you don’t like about the breed; special things about the breed; and number of varieties, posed vs. running, fur/wool, care, etc. Upload video files with youth name, state, and county to https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uLOSojO5WpWpF8pRFcFS-VtTmDfeCg_T?usp=sharing The first frame of the video should be your written email address (write it largely on a piece of paper and video it). This will be deleted if your video is selected. Email your file name to weissgle@msu.edu. Selected videos will be sent a media release form to complete and submit. You should include your animals in the video while highlighting the breed.
Weekly activities for youth
To support families and caregivers with children at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, MSU Extension has put together a weekly list of DIY activities and online events. Choose from daily childhood development, career exploration, STEM, healthy living and leadership activities - or choose them all. There are even two quick resources to support parents and caregivers during these unprecedented times. Virtual rabbit sessions
Youth age 5-19 and 4-H volunteers who are interested in learning more about the rabbit project are invited to join in virtual rabbit sessions. 4-H volunteers, staff and ARBA judges will be sharing their knowledge of the rabbit project area. All sessions will be at 6 p.m., unless otherwise stated. The dates and topics are as follows:

Virtual Heifer and Steer Show
Need practice? Miss showing? Missaukee County is inviting 4-Hers from across the state to participate in its annual Missaukee Summer Classic, but this year it will be a virtual show. Include the whole family in this educational event. The show is open to all Michigan 4-H members. Don't miss this opportunity to build confidence, get individual feedback from Judge Randy Barnes and prepare for fairs following Michigan 4-H guidelines. ‘Adulting 101’ for high school youth

Public speaking course
“Speak Out. Stand Out” is a free, four-week Public speaking course is for 4-H youth in sixth to 12th grades offered upcoming Mondays from 6 to 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. Topics to be covered include May 11, From Fear to Fantastic: how to manage stage fright; May 18, Impromptu Speaking: speaking "off the cuff" to celebrate/commemorate; May 25, Informative Speaking: telling, teaching, talking about useful topics; June 1, Persuasive Speaking: influencing positive changes through your ideas and words. Building confidence in public speaking is an important life skill with many real-life applications. Join 4-H Leader Dr. Mark Howell to sharpen your public speaking skills. Blogging Along Club
Join the fun and learn to blog. Youth age 11-18 who are interested in strengthening their writing skills, developing their voice, and sharing their thoughts in an online forum are invited to join the 4-H Blogging Along Club. Laura Ingalls Wilder read-along
Students age 7-19 and their parents and grandparents who want to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder book series and talk about it online are invited to join a read-along project. Through use of a digital bulletin board, we will share things we read and learn from the books, and we might try out some recipes or crafts mentioned and share our results. Crash Course for a Healthy Horse
This short self-paced course is based on knowledge from MSU equine health and management experts. A working knowledge of preventative health care, as well as diseases and injuries, are required when managing horses. Essential horse management skills include identifying early signs of health problems, evaluating a horse’s health status on a daily and sometimes hourly basis, and responding appropriately to emergency situations. You will gain a working knowledge of preventative health care, diseases and injuries. Course topics will include evaluating health, health care, biosecurity and recordkeeping. Birds Eating Worms Activity
Birds Eating Worms is a fun and educational activity for little ones, using clothespins and chenille stems. This activity will strengthen fine-motor development and hand/eye coordination. which are important skills for developing early writing. Children develop fine-motor skills when they use their fingers to manipulate toys, food or other objects. Complete instructions can be found at canr.msu.edu/early_childhood_development.
SPOTLIGHT ON SENIORS
Congratulations to our 4-H members who will be graduating from high school this year. We are featuring a few of them every week.
Julianna Van Meter, daughter of Andrew and Sarah Van Meter, will be graduating from Thornapple Kellogg High School. She has been a 4-H member for seven years, participating in the Middleville Clovers and Barry Good Critters and Crafts 4-H clubs. During those seven years, she was involved in the poultry and dairy feeder project areas. Julianna plans to attend Davenport University as part of the bachelor’s nursing program.
“4-H has always been a significant part of my life. Beyond the projects, 4-H teaches life-long lessons and helps prepare us for our futures,” she said. “Leadership, responsibility and community involvement are all valuable qualities that I can take away from being a part of 4-H. Despite the time commitment I’ve put into my projects over the years, it has never felt like work because I’m always having fun.”
Hailey Roodvoets, daughter of Chip and Jessica Roodvoets, will be graduating from Thornapple Kellogg. She has been a 4-H member for five years in the GenerationS Livestock 4-H club and has been a member of Caledonia FFA. While in 4-H, she participated in the swine, sheep, and dairy project areas. She plans to attend Southeastern Community College for Agriculture Business and Animal Science.
“4-H teaches you a lot of important life lessons that you will carry with you beyond your school years,” she said.
Lauren Lebeck, daughter of Brian and Katie Lebeck, will be graduating from Delton Kellogg High School. She has been a 4-H member for 13 years as a member of the Barnyard Buddies and Fancy Feathers 4-H clubs. During those years, she was involved in the goat, poultry, beef, swine and arts and crafts projects. Lauren plans to dual-enroll in Kellogg Community College and Michigan State University to pursue a degree in agricultural science.
“4-H has taught me to be more outgoing and to become a leader,” she said.
